The Story

Out on the heath stands the abandoned manor of Wilgenhof, and at night a woman wails there. Her scream carries for miles across the fields, and whoever hears it to the end dies before the next evening, without a wound, with a face full of terror. In the village at the foot of the heath, half the houses already stand empty. You arrive on the day the village bell tolls yet again.

The spirit was Adelheid, the Wailing Woman, a bride who waited on her wedding day for a beloved who never came. She waited until she died, and then she went on waiting. Her grief is so old and so deep that it has turned to poison, and her wail kills everything that lives. She cannot be defeated by steel alone, she must be understood and released.

You search the rotting manor by daylight, while she sleeps, and find letters, a half-finished wedding gown, a diary that ends abruptly. You unravel what became of her beloved, where he went, and why he never returned, and you seek the proof that can finally end her waiting.

The turn: her beloved did indeed come, but was murdered on the heath and lies there still, undiscovered, in unhallowed ground. In the climax, as her scream shatters the windows, you must bring his remains to Adelheid and tell her the truth, exactly before her wail kills you, for only this way does the Wailing Woman find her rest at last, and the village its nights again.
