The Story
Klaverdal is too rich for its size. The harvest never fails, the cellars stay full, and no one asks aloud why. You arrive on a market day where the prosperity is almost obscene, and where every adult wears a look in the eye that knows too much and dares to say too little.
Three generations ago the village council signed a pact with a horned devil: wealth and harvest, in exchange for the souls of all who die within its bounds. The prosperity was real. But the term is running out now, and Baraxes the Collector is coming to call in person, in a black suit, with a rolled parchment and a patience that reeks of sulfur. There is a loophole in the contract, somewhere among the clauses, but whoever begins to read it has already begun to sign.
You pick the parchment apart without selling yourself, question terrified elders, and search for the original deed the council once hid away. You strike deals within deals, turn Baraxes's own rules against him, and all the while hold back the villagers who, out of sheer terror, would hand one of you over as substitute payment.
The turn: the loophole exists, but it demands an offering of free will, someone must beat the devil on his own terms, in a game of words or a clash of steel. When Baraxes unfolds his true shape, horns scraping against the rafters of the council hall, everything hinges on that single clause. Lose, and you sign your names into the ledger of hell alongside the rest.
